Pam's Ghia

A 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

Engine.

Not knowing much about flat four VW engines, all I can tell you is at the moment it is running but not really well. We haven't driven the car any distance so have no idea how she will perform.

The engine is not original to the car. I believe it to be a 1967 1500cc engine and originally from an auto stick car. Ours is a manual.

This is how the engine looked when we first got the car. Needless to say some of it was rectified pretty soon afterwards!

Looks ok until you start noticing little bits of tape and cable ties and...

VW engine

I believe this engine number equates to a 1967 1500cc SP. H0670108

VW engine

Throttle return spring poorly adjusted and mini cable ties around the carb! Looks pretty nasty.

VW engine

An oil bath air filter. This was the first time I had seen anything like this. Again research has led me to the conclusion that this isn't original or truly correct for this engine.

VW engine

How not to stop a fuel leak on a fuel pump. Why would anyone take the risk considering the cost of the replacement part is nothing compared to the car going up in flames!

VW engine

Another potential fire risk, no hose clamps.

VW engine

Another view of the carb and that spring

VW engine

Low oil level and junk in the filter. I wonder when that was last changed.

VW engine

A bolt in a piece of hose connected to the intake manifold. I believe this manifold is used with an auto stick, hence my reasoning that this engine is out of an auto car.

VW engine

Nothing connected to these cables or that pipe. I think the cables are for reversing lights and so should be connected to the transmission. Something I need to check. Not sure about the pipe.
