Pam's Ghia

A 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

Electrics.

Once we got the car running and home, one of the first things I decided to do was get all of the electrical items working. As she stood, nothing appeared to be working correctly. The following items were not working. Headlights, indicators, clock, interior lights, dash lights, wipers, brake lights, tail lights. Seemed like just about everything at the time!

For her MOT everything had to be working and to UK specification.

I downloaded a wiring diagram and set to work.

lots of wires

There appeared to be lots of additional wiring and lots of cut and bare ends.

lots of wires

Lots of dirty connections

lots of wires

This will all need a really good clean up.

not so many wires

I basically removed any wiring that I did not believe to be original. It certainly gave me a better view of what was there and what was needed.

Once all the excess wires were removed I set about cleaning up the contacts and started to trace through the circuits to get everything working. I worked as methodically as possible doing one circuit at a time.

Basically I found most of the electrics not to be working due to dirty or corroded contacts. I removed each switch and carefully dismantled them to clean the contacts before reinstalling them.

It was good to finally hear the horn and have the wind shield wipers swishing across the screen!
